Long-time Denver soccer coach charged with child sexual assault

A 58-year-old soccer coach who was involved with numerous youth soccer leagues across the Denver metro area has been charged with sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust.

Marc Claire Francis allegedly molested a child in 1996, according to a news release by Carolyn Tyler, spokeswoman for Denver District Attorney Beth McCann.

The Australia native has coached or held positions in Colorado soccer for the past 28 years. Formerly of the Colorado Storm, Francis has also been affiliated with Arvada Soccer, Westminster Soccer, Sutton Soccer School and the Colorado Edge. He was also active in the United Soccer Coaches organization, the news release said.

Although no soccer players have accused Francis of molesting them, he traveled with soccer players and there is a public safety issue at stake, the news release said.

Anyone who thinks they may have been assaulted by Francis is asked to call 720-913-9000, extension 9104.

Francis’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 15.

This story was updated after the Denver District Attorney’s Office released a correction on the listing of soccer organizations Francis had been affiliated with.
